Sand Paintings

I was inspired by our visit to Writing on Stone in July of 2016, to see the beautiful petroglyphs. I was saddened that they have been so damaged, not only by wind and weather, but also by vandals who have scratched over them.

I created these little pieces based on the photos I took while I was there, supplemented by what I imagine they might have looked like in their original state.

I mixed children's play sand with acrylic gel medium, and used a pen, a small knife, and various sculpting tools to carve the images into the surface. Then I used red ochre, yellow ochre, and iridescent white to create what I think the original colouring might have looked like.

There are mistakes which I noticed after the fact. I'm leaving them for now. I like how these turned out.

These are in no way intended to mimic authentic aboriginal art; I did them just for fun and to see what might happen.
